FAQ Allegations procedure.
Can I get independent support during an allegation? Yes. Government Guidance requires your Fostering Service to make available to you, information on how to find Independent Support if you are subject to an allegation or complaint.
Do I get to choose what support I use? Yes. Many people choose not to accept the support provider recommended by their Agency or Local Authority. Call around and do your own internet research.
What if I don't know what it is I am being accused of yet? Even though the Fostering Service should tell you verbally what the accusation is, and follow this up within 3 working days, there may be what is termed as 'exceptional circumstances'. This means you can't be told until initial enquiries have been made.
Why do I feel judged guilty and needing to prove my innocence? The Local Authority responsible for your Looked After Child, has a duty to safeguard, so children will inevitably be moved first and questions asked later.
Should I get Legal advice? The vast majority of complaints and allegations are not considered a criminal matter. If the Police want to interview you they have a responsibility to provide a duty solicitor which at this early stage is sufficient to explain terminology and next steps.
How can I prepare for an allegation? This is a very good question; make certain that your daily logs are up-to-date. I know from experience that there is an art to capturing the day without writing heaps of detail, but it is worth honing this craft.
Will my attendance at training courses and support groups be considered? The Fostering Service will be observing you and your relationship with the child(ren) in your care at every event, being visible will inevitably help inform opinions.
Are you available throughout the UK? Yes, we can provide you with telephone support, help with writing and interpreting reports, email support and virtual meetings via Teams. Unlike other Independent Support we are available 24/7 and check in with you without being prompted.
How are fixed fees calculated? The majority of our work with you (at least 20 hours) is free of charge. This includes liaising with your fostering service, telephone and email support throughout the investigation and post Panel analysis of next steps. Creating your timeline, attendance at Fostering Service Review and Panel are charged at 120 minutes of our time and although these events will often take longer than 2 hours, you have our promise that we will cap costs at £120.
Do you support foster carers and other carers of vulnerable children across the entire UK? Yes we do, despite regional and national differences, the principle is the same. Carers need their voices heard and we are the people to do it!
